7 Signs You Might Need a New Mattress

Do you find yourself yawning through your work day? Being tired during the day could be a sign you’re not getting enough sleep, or that the sleep you are getting isn’t of the best quality. There can be many reasons for not sleeping well, but one of the most common culprits is an old or worn-out mattress.

To help you figure out if your mattress is causing all that yawning, Space Makers Junk Removal recommends asking yourself these seven questions to determine if it’s time to replace that mattress.

1. HOW OLD IS YOUR MATTRESS?

Most good mattresses last about eight years, depending on the materials from which they’re made, how well they’re taken care of, and the way you sleep on them. According to the Sleep Foundation, latex mattresses have the longest lifespan, while innerspring mattresses tend to have less longevity. If your mattress is older than eight years, that may be a sign you should replace it.

2. DO YOU WAKE UP HURTING?

When a mattress breaks down and doesn’t support your body anymore, you may wake up with pain or stiffness in your back, neck, shoulders, or hips. A good mattress should support your spine and relieve pressure on other parts of your body, like the hips. If, over time, you’re noticing pain and stiffness upon waking, your mattress may be offering less and less support.

One way to test whether your mattress is breaking down is to check for body impressions. After you get up, does an impression of your body remain in your mattress? A good mattress should spring back to its shape, but if yours isn’t, then that’s a sign it’s breaking down.

3. DO YOU WAKE UP TIRED?

Even after you think you’ve gotten a good night’s sleep, do you wake up feeling like you could use more sleep? You may actually be tossing and turning—and therefore not sleeping well—if your mattress has worn down. Experts say most people need around 8 hours of sleep each night to feel rested and well. To test whether you’re sleeping soundly on your mattress, try moving to another bed for a night or two and see if you feel any better. If you do, then you may need to replace your mattress.

4. DOES YOUR MATTRESS LOOK BAD?

Another way to tell if your mattress is breaking down is to assess its appearance. If the mattress is visibly sagging or lumpy, or you see tears, holes, or stains, those are signs it’s time to replace the mattress. In addition, if you can feel innersprings or can feel all the way to your box springs, then your mattress has definitely broken down.

5. ARE YOUR ALLERGIES WORSE AFTER SLEEPING?

Did you know that mattresses collect body fluids (sweat, saliva, blood, etc.), as well as dead skin cells and dust? And that these things attract bacteria, as well as dust mites, microscopic insects that eat dead skin cells? If it’s not allergy season and you’re experiencing a runny nose, itchy or watery eyes, asthma or difficulty breathing, or a sore throat, you could be allergic to your mattress—or rather, to the dust mites in it. You can reduce your allergies by dusting and vacuuming your bedroom often, vacuuming your mattress and encasing it in an allergy-proof cover, washing bedding often, and running a dehumidifier. However, if your allergies still persist, it might be time to get rid of that mattress.

6. DO YOU WAKE UP HOT?

As mattresses break down and grow softer, air can’t circulate as well, and mattresses feel warmer. If you’re waking in a sweat, an old mattress could be the reason.

7. DO YOUR PARTNER’S MOVEMENTS DISTURB YOU?

If your partner turns over in the night, does the movement wake you up? Or if the dog jumps on the bed, does it rock the whole thing? A mattress that isn’t as firm as it used to be will magnify movements that can interrupt a good night’s sleep. If you and your partner are waking one another up because you’re uncomfortable and restless, it’s time for a new mattress.
