10 WAYS TO MAKE YOUR GUEST ROOM COMFORTABLE

clean bedroom

You’ve got the itinerary planned. You’ve bought groceries, done a little pre-cooking. You’ve cleaned the house top to bottom. So, you’re ready for your house guests, right?

But is your guest room ready? No amount of good food, entertainment, or cozy chats can make up for an uncomfortable night in your guest room. Make sure your visitors aren’t going to get cranky from sleepless nights. Space Makers Junk Removal has 10 tips to help make your guest room a dream room for your company.

1. MAKE SURE THE BED IS COMFORTABLE

That means making sure the mattress in your guest room is in good condition. You don’t want your guests to be crippled by a sagging mattress or unable to sleep because the mattress was too lumpy or too hard. One way to find out if your guest bed is comfortable is to sleep on it yourself for a night. If you find it’s not comfortable, you might need a new mattress, or you might need to add a topper or pad to compensate for a mattress that’s too soft or too hard.

2. PROVIDE NICE BEDDING AND LINENS

Make sure you supply comfortable pillows for your guests. Since some people prefer a soft pillow and others prefer firm pillows, try to have a variety from which guests can choose. Cover guest pillows in a protector to alleviate allergens, stains, and dust mites. Make sure all sheets and blankets are clean, and supply extras in case guests need them.

3. GAGE THE TEMPERATURE

Think about how hot or cold your guest room is, and adjust vents accordingly, particularly if they’re placed right above a bed. If possible, move a bed so that it isn’t directly beneath a vent. Ask guests what temperature they prefer for sleeping, and tweak your thermostat to accommodate them.

4. MAKE SPACE FOR GUESTS’ THINGS

luggage rack

Nothing is more annoying to a guest than having no place to put a suitcase but the floor. If you can’t provide a luggage rack, then make sure guests can place their bags on a chair, table, or bench.

In closets, make sure guests have plenty of space for their clothes, and provide enough hangers for them. Clear space in drawers for guests’ things, and make sure to remove all of your personal knick-knacks and collectibles from tables and chests so guests have room for their things. Display only items guests might need, like a clock.

5. GIVE GUESTS PLENTY OF LIGHT

Make sure guests have a lamp next to the bed—and maybe on both sides of the bed—for reading. Add a nightlight so guests won’t have to feel their way to the bathroom in the dark. For ladies, having a lighted makeup mirror on a desk is a plus.

6. THINK ABOUT SEATING

Does your guest room have a chair or two that guests can use instead of sitting on the bed? If you know a guest might need to do some work on a laptop, do you have a desk with a chair where he or she can do that?

7. MAKE SURE GUESTS CAN GET TO PLUGS

phone charging

Guests who need to recharge cell phones, tablets, or laptops will need access to plugs. Make sure you have at least one plug that isn’t covered up by furniture.

8. SUPPLY THE BASICS

alarm clock

Your guest room should be stocked with lotion, boxes of tissue, and an alarm clock. Provide additional items like basic toiletries (toothbrushes, toothpaste, mouthwash) that guests often forget to pack, and set out a pad of paper and a pen or two.

9. CREATE A BASKET OF TREATS

To really pamper your guests, surprise them with a basket filled with snacks like granola bars, cookies, nuts, or crackers and bottles of water. Be sure to ask guests about any food allergies before you make up the basket.

10. HELP GUESTS GET CONNECTED

On a piece of paper or an index card, write down the Wi-Fi password or the passwords to streaming services if you have a TV in your guest room. Having this information at hand will prevent guests from having to bother you to get it. If you're concerned about security, set up a guest password.
